GML Geography Mark-Up Language: Foundation for the Geo-Web, by Ron Lake, David S. Burggraf, Milan Trninic, Laurie Rae; publ. by Wiley With a chief writer who was responsible for much of the GML standard, this book is an indispensible reference for those who wish to create their own GML application schema, or wish to have a better understanding of GML. |

The KML Handbook: Geographic Visualization for the Web, by Josie Wernecke, Addison Wesley 2008 Josie Wernecke provides an excellent description of all of the features of KML (Keyhole Markup Language). This book serves as both an introductory guide and a reference for KML practitioners. |

Web Mapping Illustrated, by Tyler Mitchell, publ. O'Reilly Media Aimed at web authors with little GIS experience, this book gives a good introduction to creating an online web map or service using open source tools. The book should have enough to get you going, but you will need to consult other sources to complete a good working site. In my opinion, the book should be reprinted with a section covering map clients such as OpenLayers. |

One of the few books in the O'Reilly "Hacks" range that is worthy of the title, this book covers a wide range of different geospatial topics. The wide ranging shallow approach proves useful as a sampler to identify approaches which might be appropriate for a problem. Unfortunately, this book is now three years old and is urgently in need of an update - especially for the online chapters. |

Chandu Thota's book Programming MapPoint in .NET features a good developer-level coverage of using Microsoft's mapping technologies (circa 2005) in the .NET framework. Recommended for developers who use the MapPoint Web Service and the desktop edition of MapPoint, but the Virtual Earth coverage is now of historical interest only. |
