This short article describes the architecture of the EcoMap Costa Rica map pages as an example of a typical geospatial web application that uses multiple software technologies. It is the first of two articles. The second article uses examples from the EcoMap Costa Rica website demonstrating the use of OpenLayers in order to combine Virtual Earth with other map technologies.

Version 1.6.0 of the ubiquitous GDAL/OGR package has been released. Full details and the(very) long list ofadditions and changes are listed at: http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/Release/1.6.0-News GDAL/OGR (Geospatial Data Abstraction Library) is used in a wide range of open source mapping projects and a number of commercial offerings. In addition to the main library, OGR contains a number of data manipulation utilities - these proved useful when I was preparing the data for the Eco Map Costa Rica project. |

Web Mapping Illustrated, by Tyler Mitchell, publ. O'Reilly Media Aimed at web authors with little GIS experience, this book gives a good introduction to creating an online web map or service using open source tools. The book should have enough to get you going, but you will need to consult other sources to complete a good working site. In my opinion, the book should be reprinted with a section covering map clients such as OpenLayers. |

Google have announced that their Google Earth Plus service is no longer available for purchase. This originally cost US$20 and allowed realtime GPS tracking. Google Earth Professional continues to be available, and Google say that they are working to get the GPS tracking features included in the free version of Google Earth. KML (Keyhole Markup Language) was developed by Keyhole, Inc for adding geographic annotation, models, and simple animation to their Keyhole Earth Viewer. Keyhole was taken over by Google in 2004, and the Earth Viewer is now known as Google Earth. Google have also adopted it for use on their Google Maps platform, and it is quickly becoming the de facto standard for geographic annotation. |
