Blumenthals have an analysis based on Hitwise data that shows Google Maps overtaking MapQuest with a 39.38% market share vs. MapQuest's 39.14% market share on the week ending 11th April. Blumenthal attempt to correlate Google's recent growth in market share with their expanded rollout of Local coverage.

We've heard this and other MapQuest vs. Google news quite a bit over the past 6 months, and it is about as useful as the political poll over-analysis in the run up to an election.  Hitwise even claim 4 significant figures in their market share figures! Quite amazing - even the political analysists don't project so much false accuracy.  No doubt there'll be a news item in the coming weeks that MapQuest are actually in the lead. Suffice to say MapQuest and Google Maps both have about the same share of the consumer market, and that should be good enough for the rest of us
