The first news item after my return is that MapServer 5.6 has been released. 5.6 introduces an XML schema (and XSLT) for map files; big improvements in WGS query speeds with the addition of one-pass query processing; better support of high resolution output (ie. suitable for printing); labeling enhancements; and improved efficiency when reading large shapefiles.

As to be expected, this major release also includes a number of bug fixes and security enhancements. The full OSGeo announcement can be found here.
