With accessible commercial competition from Google and Microsoft, NASA have wisely decided to give their World Wind project a new mission. Instead of being limited to one set of image data accessed by one program/component, World Wind is changing to be a multiple set of components that can be used in any number of programs. World Wind is also open source, allowing the program components to be modified. Chad Zimmerman (a World Wind developer) describes this change in more detail on his blog.
