GeoServer have announced the release of GeoServer 1.7.2. Sounds like a minor release, but in reality 1.7.2 adds advanced labelling features (curves,etc);  hatching; HTML image maps; support for DB2; GDAL/OGR; and over 70 bug fixes.

GeoServer is a Java based server for viewing and editing geospatial data,  that uses OGC standards such as WMS and WFS. It is also includes OpenLayers (client-side map display/control)  and GeoTools (an open source Java GIS toolkit).
