NASA World Wind: A New Mission PDF Print E-mail

With accessible commercial competition from Google and Microsoft, NASA have wisely decided to give their World Wind project a new mission. Instead of being limited to one set of image data accessed by one program/component, World Wind is changing to be a multiple set of components that can be used in any number of programs. World Wind is also open source, allowing the program components to be modified.

MapServer 'graduates' OSGeo Incubation PDF Print E-mail

Over the holiday break, OSGeo announced that the popular MapServer software has 'graduated' from their incubation process. This is an OSGeo seal of approval that indicates that a project is mature. To graduate, a project must meet a number of requirements including open community operation, responsible governance model, and general good project operation.

As of this month, 35 years of data covering LANDSATs 1 to 7 are now available from the USGS Global Visualization Viewer.

GDAL/OGR (Geospatial Data Abstraction Library) is used in a wide range of open source mapping projects and a number of commercial offerings. In addition to the main library, OGR contains a number of data manipulation utilities - these proved useful when I was preparing the data for the Eco Map Costa Rica project.

Google Earth Plus: No longer available for purchase PDF Print E-mail

Google have announced that their Google Earth Plus service is no longer available for purchase. This originally cost US$20 and allowed realtime GPS tracking. Google Earth Professional continues to be available, and Google say that they are working to get the GPS tracking features included in the free version of Google Earth. Ordnance Survey amends developer agreement PDF Print E-mail

The UK Ordnance Survey have amended their developer agreement for their OpenSpace API. Released in January 2008, this API is a free service that allows mash-ups of Ordnance Survey mapping. The main changes reflect the fact that much of the API is now available as an open-source download. These can be found on SourceForge.Net as the OSGB Web Map Tools.

ESRI release ArcGIS JavaScript v1.2 API PDF Print E-mail

ESRI have announced the release of Version 1.2 of the ArcGIS JavaScript API.

This release is a part of ArcGIS Server 9.3 Service Pack1, and adds ArcGIS Server Image Services, support for Dojo 1.2, as well as various enhancements such as layer refresh and cache methods, and "on the fly" projections.
