Polar Maps and Projections: Part 1, Overview PDF Print E-mail

With the success of my earlier series on global equal area map projections (starting with this overview), I received a number of requests to produce a similar how-to article for polar maps. The first part of this article (published here) provides an overview of a number of different map projections commonly used for polar maps. Next week, I shall provide a guide to producing a working map of the northern hemisphere centered on the North Pole, using the Stereographic Projection.

The results of these articles can be seen in the new Polar Projections section of the Equal Area Maps website. Note that only one of these polar projections actually has the equal area property.

Display ArcGIS Server Query Results in a Dojo DataGrid PDF Print E-mail

This article was previously published on GeoChalkboard, and has been reproduced here with permission. It was originally published as two separate articles which have been combined here to emphasize their relevance to the geospatial web. GeoChalkboard is published by Geospatial Training Services who provide a range of geospatial web courses.

Many ArcGIS Server applications need to be able to query data from a map service and display the results in a tabular structure. In this post I will show you how to use the DojoX DataGrid along with ItemFileReadStore and QueryTask from the ArcGIS Server JavaScript API to display your query results in a tabular structure. The process is really quite simple once you understand the basic concepts.

More details about "free" Ordnance Survey Data PDF Print E-mail

Last year, the Ordnance Survey (Britain's national mapping agency) announced that they were going to freely release much of their data for non-commercial applications. Although some people quickly assumed this would be everything, most of us were well aware that only some of the data would be 'free'. For example Mastermap was almost certainly going to continue to be a commercial-only product.

Details are finally beginning to emerge with the Ordnance Survey's publication, Policy Options for Geographic Information from Ordnance Survey - Consultation. As expected, the raster products that were already available through OpenSpace will be included in the initiative (they are already 'free', but their delivery & use will become more flexible). 1:25,000 colour raster and the "MiniScale" (1:1,000,000) raster products will also be added to the free raster range.

The free vector products will include Code-Point (full grid-referenced postcode data - previously announced), Boundary Line (1:10,000 boundary dataset - used by a lot of local governments),  Meridian 2 (transport network and topographic themes), and Strategi (1:250,000 scale topographic database).

Yes we returned back from our Christmas / New Year grand tour of New Mexico a few days ago, safe and sound. For those who are interested, Marcy kept a blog and I've published a few photos at fotopic. The blog has quite a bit of ornithological content, and my photos have a leaning towards geological subjects. The only geographic content in the photos, is a photograph of our dog at Four Corners - the only place where four US States meet at one point. We almost managed to get one foot in each State but he had an aversion to Colorado for some reason! We had a good time, and we both feel refreshed for the new year.

Normal GeoWebGuru service will resume on Monday (tomorrow) with news postings and a GeoSpatial Training Services article about using ArcGIS Server Query Results with Dojo. Then next week we have the start of a two-part series about Polar Map Projections.

After implementing geo-location support in their own API, Twitter have purchased Mixer Labs. Media Labs produce the GeoAPI geo-location and reverse geocoding services. Media Labs describe their services as helping developers to determine not just "What is happening?" but where it is happening as well. As to be expected from such a purchase, Twitter have already said they will be integrating these abilities into the Twitter API.

The official Twitter blog post announcement can be found here.

The first news item after my return is that MapServer 5.6 has been released. 5.6 introduces an XML schema (and XSLT) for map files; big improvements in WGS query speeds with the addition of one-pass query processing; better support of high resolution output (ie. suitable for printing); labeling enhancements; and improved efficiency when reading large shapefiles.

As to be expected, this major release also includes a number of bug fixes and security enhancements. The full OSGeo announcement can be found here.

Well it is nearly the end of the year, and I shall be hitting the road this weekend, so let me wish all our readers the best of wishes for the holiday season - Christmas, Hanukkah, and of course the New Year!

This has been a good first year for the GeoWebGuru website. We have a number of new articles lined up for January, including a couple of articles from Geospatial Training Services and a follow-up to our popular series on map projections with a  two-part article on Polar Projections.

As ever, we welcome your comments, thoughts for new articles, and even article submissions. Have you been involved in a neat online mapping project that you'd like to write about? If so, let us know!
